Asphalt Paving & Repair in Williston, ND
From new installations to structural repair, we build and restore asphalt surfaces that hold up to North Dakota’s toughest conditions.
SERVICES
Built for the Demands of Western North Dakota
Williston Paving delivers asphalt paving and repair services built around the conditions that define this region — heavy truck traffic, extreme freeze-thaw cycles, and ground that shifts with the seasons. Whether you need a new parking lot, a full overlay, or targeted structural repairs, our crew handles every phase of the job from subgrade prep through final compaction.
We work with commercial property owners, oil and gas operators, municipalities, and residential clients across the Williston Basin. Every project gets the same attention to base preparation, material spec, and drainage — because cutting corners here means repaving in three years instead of ten.
INSTALLATION
New Asphalt Installation
A paving job is only as good as what goes underneath it. Our installation process is sequenced to build long-term structural integrity into every layer — from the dirt up.
1. Excavation & Grading
Strip topsoil and organic material, grade the subgrade to establish proper drainage slope, and compact the native soil to a stable bearing surface.
2. Base Preparation
Install and compact crushed aggregate base in controlled lifts. This layer distributes load and prevents settling — it is the most critical phase of the job.
3. Asphalt Paving
Hot-mix asphalt placed at the right temperature and thickness for the application — whether it is a commercial lot handling loaded trucks or a residential driveway.
4. Compaction & Finish
Roller compaction locks the asphalt into a dense, smooth surface. Proper compaction means fewer voids, better water resistance, and a longer service life.
BASE PREP
Why Base Preparation Makes or Breaks a Paving Job
Most asphalt failures are not surface problems — they are base problems. When a parking lot develops alligator cracking two years after it was paved, or a driveway sinks at the edges, the cause is almost always inadequate base preparation. The asphalt itself was fine. What was underneath it was not.
In western North Dakota, this matters more than most places. The clay-heavy soils in the Williston Basin expand when wet and contract when dry. Freeze-thaw cycles push moisture through every gap in the structure. If the aggregate base was not thick enough, not compacted in proper lifts, or not graded for drainage, the pavement will move — and once it starts moving, the cracking follows fast.
We treat base prep as the most important phase of every project, not a line item to minimize. That means proof-rolling the subgrade to find soft spots before we build on them, compacting aggregate in controlled lifts with density testing, and verifying drainage slope before a single ton of asphalt goes down. It costs a little more upfront. It costs far less over the life of the pavement.
REPAIR
Asphalt Repair Services
Not every damaged surface needs a full tear-out. We match the repair method to the failure type — so you get a lasting fix without overspending on work the pavement does not need.
Crack Filling & Sealing
Hot-applied crack sealant prevents water from reaching the base layer. Sealing cracks early is the single most cost-effective way to extend pavement life in freeze-thaw climates.
Pothole Patching
We saw-cut around the damaged area, remove failed material, rebuild the base if needed, and fill with hot-mix asphalt — not cold patch. The result is a structural repair, not a temporary plug.
Overlay & Resurfacing
When the base is still sound but the surface has worn out, we mill the top layer and apply a fresh lift of asphalt. This restores ride quality and structural capacity at a fraction of full replacement cost.
Drainage Correction
Standing water is the fastest way to destroy a parking lot. We regrade low spots, install catch basins, and correct slope issues so water moves off the surface instead of sitting on it.
Full-Depth Reclamation
For pavement with widespread base failure, we pulverize the existing asphalt into the subgrade, re-compact it as a stabilized base, and pave a new surface on top — recycling what is already there.
Sealcoating
A protective coal-tar or asphalt emulsion coating that shields the surface from UV damage, oil penetration, and water intrusion. Applied on a maintenance cycle, sealcoating can double your pavement’s lifespan.
